Natural cork

The cork stopper is made of natural cork oak bark, which is directly stamped after processing. For hundreds of years, natural cork has been used as an ideal sealant for wine. Not only is the elasticity good, but the characteristics of micro-oxygen permeability have a lot to help the aging of high-quality wines.

However, natural cork is very easy to generate TCA during the processing process, causing cork pollution and destroying the quality of wine. Fortunately, with technological innovation, it is now possible to greatly reduce the probability of cork pollution.

Technical plug

Technical stopper is a general term for cork stoppers processed through various technical means. According to different processing methods, they can be divided into the following categories.

Stuffing plug

The filling plug is coated with a mixture of cork powder and latex on the outside of the natural plug, which is used to fill the cracks and holes of the natural plug to improve the appearance and performance, and the price is relatively cheap.

Polymer plug

This is the cheapest technical plug that uses resin glue to aggregate cork particles together. The drawback of this type of cork is that the wine and the resin will decompose it after a few months, causing cork particles to fall into the wine and destroy the wine quality. It is only suitable for wine that is consumed in a short period of time.

Diam plug

This is the most technologically-content of the technical plugs. It is produced by Oeneo. It grinds natural plugs into small particles, and washes the cork particles under supercritical carbon dioxide to remove residual TCA, and then combine the particles with plastic polymers Mix together and form by compression and heating. Due to the removal of TCA, the cork contamination of wine can be avoided.

1+1 patch plug

It refers to attaching a piece of natural plug to each end of the polymer plug. This ingenious design has the low cost of the polymer plug and the protection of the natural plug.

Synthetic plug

In order to avoid the cork pollution caused by TCA, the people have invested a lot of research and invented synthetic plugs made of surgical plastics. Because of the difference in technology, they are divided into molded plugs and extrusion plugs. Synthetic plugs can be made into a variety of bright colors, which are loved by some consumers. But similarly, this kind of bottle stopper is also flawed, and the sealing performance is not as good as cork stopper. Although it has little effect on daily table wine and fast-consumption wine, it is not suitable for high-quality wine that needs long-term aging.

Screw cap

For many years, the screw cap has always given the impression of being cheap, but young people in the new era do not think so, so the screw cap has become a symbol of wine fashion. The screw cap also has many advantages. It will not cause cork pollution, and will not cause quality differences. It does not require special bottle opening tools and has better airtight oxygen barrier properties. However, later winemakers discovered that too good a seal is also risky. The lack of oxygen can easily produce a reducing taste, which is caused by the reduction of sulfur dioxide in the wine to hydrogen sulfide. For this reason, according to the different oxygen permeability, screw caps have developed three kinds of gaskets, tin foil gaskets and two Salan gaskets.
